SAGE SIMPSON
Lighting Designer and Choreographer
I am an interdisciplinary dance artist exploring movement and technical theatrical design. When working on a new project I consider multiple elements and processes: lighting, stage layout, sound, editing, and choreography. My goal is to study and master multiple art forms — whether it be live theater, dance, or recorded moving images — so that I may draw upon each at will within my art practice, creating a new artistic language of my own.
From an early age I was exposed to many different forms of artistic expression. Continuing on with that framework, I went on to formally study many genres of dance: ballet, modern, jazz and hip-hop More recently I've become intrigued by and have started researching the subcultures of voguing and waacking.
Since entering college I have played an active role in the theater, primarily focused on the technical aspects of a stage performance. This work has influenced my approach as a choreographer, allowing me to consider techniques such as lighting and stage design and how they impact and alter the perception of the human body within a dance context.
